A New Token Passing Protocol on a Star LAN

چکیده
The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers 802.5 (1) standard has become a widely accepted protocol for token ring local area networks (LANs). A major part of its success is the advantages it offers over other network architectures. These advantages include its reliability and simplicity of hardware interfacing the transmission medium to the stations’ electronics. Because each station provides an active tap to the transmission medium, there is great flexibility in length of link between stations. Many stations can be attached to the transmission medium without deterioration of the signal. The token ring has been remarkably adaptable to the available transmission medium. It has been implemented by using shielded twisted wire pair, coaxial cable, and fiber optic cable, all with great success. A token ring is a ring whose media access control protocol is based on a short control frame, called a token, which circulates around the ring. A station that wants to transmit data on the medium must wait for a free token. When a free token arrives at the station, the token is changed to a busy token and the station transmits the busy token followed by its data packet. When the station has transmitted its packet and receives the first part of its data packet back A New Token Passing Protocol on a Star LAN

Initial studies of SCI LAN topologies for local area clustering
A Local Area Network (LAN) can be built using the ANSI/IEEE Standard 1592-1992 Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI) as the underlying hardware protocol. For the LAN, SCI will act as a new physical layer, and traditional protocols (as e.g. TCP/IP) may be run on top of SCI. In a first approach, SCI is used to implement message passing while new protocols and functions that take advantage of the shar...
متن کاملPerformance Study of Token-Passing Protocol for Traffic Multiplicity in Optical Networks
This paper extended a mathematical technique to model the behaviour of token-passing protocol in a star-coupled wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical network for traffic multiplicity, based on a semi-Markov process. This analytical model is able to predict the results accurately. It is found that the proposed static priority scheme performs reasonably well in relatively stable and pred...
متن کاملProperties of BuST and Timed-Token Protocols under Local Allocation Schemes
Token passing channel access mechanisms are used in several communication networks. An important class of token passing approaches are the so-called timed token protocols, which are able to manage both real-time traffic and non real-time traffic. Recently, a new token passing protocol, called Budget Sharing Token protocol (BuST), was proposed to improve the existing timed token approaches in te...
متن کاملPerformance Improvement of Expanded Integrated Local Area Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)
In Local Area Networks (LAN) connected together by bridges, flow control and smooth traffic in the network is very important. However, congestion at bridges can cause intensive loss of received frames. In addition, the received frames are thrown away and have to be retransmitted by the source station, which causes more congestion and massive reduction in the overall network throughput. The netw...
متن کاملThe Virtual Token-Passing Ethernet Implementation and Experimental Results
This paper presents the design and first experimental results of VTPE (Virtual Token-passing Ethernet). VTPE is a deterministic protocol for real-time applications based on shared Ethernet, aimed to be used either in small processing power processors or in powerful ones. It is based on implicit token rotation similar to the virtual token-passing used in the P-NET protocol. The VTPE implementati...
